Victorian Costumes

What would be an easy way to create a Victorian costume?
For Halloween this year, I'm (hopefully) going as one of my favourite book characters, and seeing as the book is set in Victorian England, how would I go about making my own costume? Are there any patterns online, and what kind of material would be the best?

If you only need them for a limited time I would look for a shop that rents costumes (yellow pages) near you.
If you want to keep them for e.g. "olde tyme" photos you could be lucky with theaters which sometimes sell costumes from their fundus when they need space. (maybe film productions do the same)
You can also have them tailored after old photos (probably the most expensive solution).
Thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets also come to my mind.

However take some pics with you made in that period so you can compare when there if the look is really what you want. It would also make it easier for the seller.

I need a victorian costume for my daughter in a hurry but can only find maids or school costumes.What I want is just an everyday typical victorian girls outfit that victorians would have worn everyday ie shawl and long skirt with blouse etc. Does anyone have any ideas I haven't got the skills or time to make one!

Try Civil War Era costumes.
edit: There are costume shops that rent. Sometimes universities will have such costumes. They may have child sizes because for some plays they must enlist children to play parts.
